Digital Voices of Southeast Serbia
To bridge the persistent gender and regional gaps in digital knowledge, the project „Digital Voices of Southeast Serbia“ addressed a quiet yet pervasive challenge in local communities. Prior to launching our main activities, we conducted a baseline research survey with 100 women across the region to understand their online habits and obstacles. The findings revealed that while all participants use the internet daily, an overwhelming 94% act exclusively as passive content consumers. More importantly, 86% of the surveyed women pointed to the fear of online hostility, criticism, and local judgment in conservative environments as the primary barrier preventing them from publishing original digital content. These results proved that the issue was not a lack of technical skills or internet access, but a critical absence of safe, supportive spaces.
To tackle this problem at its root, we organized the Women’s Wiki Camp in Pirot at the end of May. Rather than offering traditional, technical lectures, the camp was specifically designed as a safe physical space built around peer-to-peer trust and one-on-one mentorship. By creating an encouraging sisterhood atmosphere, participants quickly overcame their initial hesitation and digital fear. Throughout the camp and the follow-up editing phase, these former passive readers successfully researched, wrote, and published 41 high-quality Wikipedia articles in Serbian.

The most inspiring outcome of the project lies in its long-term impact and community sustainability. Two of the most active camp participants have fully integrated into our Wikimedia community and recently took a bold step forward by applying for their own project grant for the upcoming year. Their self-initiated project will focus on expanding Wikipedia coverage of influential women in Zaječar and Niš, effectively transitioning them from guided camp participants to local project leaders. Furthermore, at the beginning of October, we presented the complete results, methodology, and key takeaways of the „Digital Voices“ project to the wider Serbian Wikimedia community during our annual gathering. By sharing this model, we demonstrated how local, targeted mentorship can successfully decentralize knowledge creation and transform passive readers into active digital leaders.
